Josef Newgarden has seized control of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES Power Rankings after delivering a dominant performance at Phoenix Raceway, ending Alex Palou's extended stay at the summit.
The Team Penske driver started second and cruised to victory in Saturday's Good Ranchers 250, capitalizing on misfortune for the defending series champion. Palou, who had topped the rankings since winning the $1 Million Thermal Club Challenge on March 24, 2024, crashed out after contact with Rinus VeeKay on Lap 21.
Newgarden's Phoenix triumph came just one week after he mounted an impressive recovery drive at St. Petersburg, charging from 23rd on the grid to finish seventh in the season opener. The two-time series champion now leads the championship standings heading into this weekend's Java House Arlington Grand Prix.
Palou's crash marked his worst weekend since finishing 25th at last June's Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear. The Chip Ganassi Racing driver had opened the 2026 season with victory at St. Petersburg, leading a race-high 59 of 100 laps, but qualified only 10th at Phoenix before his early exit.
Kyle Kirkwood has emerged as a consistent contender, climbing to second in the rankings after back-to-back strong performances. The Andretti Global driver finished fourth at St. Petersburg and second at Phoenix despite starting 15th and 11th respectively. He trails Newgarden by just five points in the championship standings.
David Malukas has made an impressive start to his first season with Team Penske, jumping from 10th to fifth in the rankings. The young driver earned his first career NTT P1 Award at Phoenix and converted pole position into a third-place finish after leading a race-high 73 of 250 laps.
Christian Rasmussen showed race-winning pace at Phoenix despite ultimately finishing outside the top 10. The Ed Carpenter Racing driver climbed from 18th on the grid to lead 69 laps before contact with Will Power while battling for the lead on Lap 209 ended his chances for a second career victory.
Scott Dixon returned to the top 10 rankings at 10th position after using an alternate strategy to finish seventh at Phoenix. The six-time series champion had been left wondering what might have been after a wheel came off during his second pit stop at St. Petersburg, ending what he believed was a podium-caliber performance.
Pato O'Ward maintained his consistency with his 20th consecutive appearance in the Power Rankings, moving up to fourth. The Arrow McLaren driver has qualified in Row 4 for both races this season and converted those starts into fifth and fourth-place finishes, giving him 50 career top-five results.
The rankings shake-up sets up an intriguing battle heading into Sunday's race at Texas Motor Speedway, where Newgarden will look to extend his championship lead while Palou aims to bounce back from his Phoenix disappointment. With several drivers showing race-winning speed early in the season, the fight for Power Rankings supremacy appears wide open.
