In a strategic move aimed at strengthening their driver development program, Williams F1 has officially signed 2022 Formula 3 Champion Victor Martins to their Driver Academy. This addition follows the departure of Franco Colapinto, who recently joined Alpine as a reserve driver.
The announcement was made just ahead of the Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix, a significant event in the racing calendar. “We’re thrilled to welcome Victor to the Williams Racing Driver Academy. He has repeatedly demonstrated that he is a talented driver who is capable of winning championships,” said Sven Smeets, Williams' Sporting Director.
Martins earned his championship title with ART Grand Prix in 2022, showcasing a remarkable performance in a competitive field. His experience includes a respectable fifth-place finish in his rookie Formula 3 season in 2021, which laid the groundwork for his subsequent success.

Transitioning to Formula 2 in 2023, Martins continued to showcase his potential by finishing fifth in the overall standings that season, highlighted by a victory in the Feature Race at Silverstone, one of the sport’s most prestigious circuits. He competed again in Formula 2 in the past season, where he secured the seventh position in the final standings.
“I’m super happy to be joining the Williams Racing Driver Academy,” said Martins. “This is a new chapter for me, but my goal remains the same – to push myself to the limit, both as a person and as a racing driver, and to make it to Formula 1.”
