Max Verstappen survived one of his closest calls of the 2023 season so far, holding off a charging Lewis Hamilton by just 0.179 seconds to claim victory at the Australian Grand Prix in a thrilling encounter at Albert Park Circuit.
Starting from pole position, the reigning world champion looked set for another commanding Red Bull Racing victory, but Hamilton's Mercedes came alive in the closing stages to mount a spectacular challenge that had the Melbourne crowd on their feet.
The seven-time world champion, starting from third on the grid, produced one of his finest drives in recent memory to finish second – his best result of the early 2023 season. The gap of less than two-tenths of a second marked the smallest winning margin we've seen from Verstappen this year, suggesting the competitive order may be shifting.
"That was proper racing," said a delighted Hamilton after the race, though specific quotes were not immediately available from the Red Bull camp.
Fernando Alonso continued Aston Martin's remarkable early-season form by claiming the final podium spot, finishing 0.769 seconds behind Hamilton. The Spaniard, who started fourth, maintained his position throughout the race and looked comfortable in third, underlining Aston Martin's transformation into genuine podium contenders.
Perhaps the most impressive drive of the day belonged to Sergio Perez, who produced a masterclass in damage limitation. Starting from a disastrous 20th position on the grid – the result of qualifying difficulties – the Mexican carved his way through the field to finish fifth, just 3.320 seconds behind race winner Verstappen.
Perez's recovery drive was a reminder of his racecraft abilities and ensured Red Bull Racing still collected maximum points from both cars despite the challenging starting position. His progression from last to fifth represented the biggest grid-to-finish improvement of the race.
McLaren had reason to celebrate with both cars finishing in the points, led by Lando Norris in sixth place. The Briton climbed seven positions from his 13th-place grid slot to finish 3.701 seconds behind Perez, suggesting the Woking team's upgrades are beginning to bear fruit.
Teammate Oscar Piastri continued his impressive rookie season with eighth place, the Australian providing the home crowd with something to cheer about. Starting 16th, Piastri's eight-position gain demonstrated both his racecraft and McLaren's improved race pace.
One of the more surprising points finishes came from Guanyu Zhou, who guided his Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber from 17th on the grid to ninth at the chequered flag. The Chinese driver's eight-position improvement was crucial for a team fighting at the lower end of the points-paying positions.
Yuki Tsunoda rounded out the points positions in tenth for Racing Bulls, moving up two spots from his 12th-place grid position to ensure the Red Bull sister team didn't leave Melbourne empty-handed.
The race appeared to be following a familiar script in the early stages, with Verstappen controlling proceedings from the front. However, as the stint lengths extended and different strategic approaches began to play out, Hamilton found himself in an increasingly strong position.
The Mercedes appeared to come alive on the harder compounds, allowing Hamilton to close the gap to Verstappen in the final stages. What had seemed like another routine Red Bull victory suddenly became a genuine fight, with Hamilton applying pressure right until the chequered flag fell.
The close finish will provide encouragement for Mercedes and the rest of the field that Red Bull's dominance may not be as overwhelming as it appeared in the season's opening rounds. Hamilton's pace in the closing stages suggested that with the right circumstances, victories may be possible for teams other than Red Bull.
For Aston Martin, the double points finish confirmed their status as the season's surprise package. Both Alonso and Stroll looked comfortable throughout the race, with their cars appearing well-suited to Albert Park's unique characteristics.
The Australian Grand Prix delivered exactly the kind of exciting finish that Formula 1 needed after concerns about competitive balance. While Verstappen extended his championship lead, the narrow margin of victory and Hamilton's late charge suggested that the 2023 season may yet produce some surprises.
As the championship moves on to the next round, all eyes will be on whether Mercedes can build on this promising performance and if Red Bull can respond to their closest challenge yet. What's certain is that Albert Park reminded everyone why Formula 1 remains the pinnacle of motorsport entertainment.
