Sergio Perez attended a press conference in Leon, Mexico, where he addressed reporters for the first time following his departure from Red Bull Racing. Confirmed as leaving the Milton Keynes-based team just a month earlier, Perez reflected on his recent challenges in Formula 1 and his next steps.
"My priority is to enjoy myself, to do things I haven’t done, to be with my family," Perez stated. His remarks come exactly four years after he initially signed with Red Bull, a period marked by both highs and lows.
The 2024 season was particularly tumultuous for Perez. After a promising start, his performance faltered, leading to only 152 points—far behind teammate Max Verstappen, who amassed an impressive 437 points. This substantial gap was detrimental to Red Bull, resulting in a disappointing finish of third place in the Constructors' Championship.
During the season, Perez acknowledged his role in the team's struggles. He noted, "Everything happened very quickly at the end of last season; I didn’t expect to leave the team." After the finale in Abu Dhabi, negotiations between Perez and Red Bull ultimately confirmed their split. The team has opted to replace him with Liam Lawson, a decision that reflects the urgency to bolster performance in future competitions.
In light of his departure, Perez shared that he plans to take time off from racing while considering his future. "In the next six months, I will make a decision on what I want for the next step in my career," he explained. Although stepping away from the driver’s seat at Red Bull, he’ll maintain a connection to the brand through ambassadorial roles and promotional events.
While Perez remains open to opportunities, including a potential return to a team like the incoming Cadillac outfit in 2026, he stressed that he is not rushing to make any commitments. The 33-year-old veteran candidly expressed, "It’s too early to give an answer as to whether I intend to return to Formula 1."
Securing a contract extension until the end of the 2026 season had initially reignited hopes for a successful tenure at Red Bull. However, the unexpected termination led Perez to reassess his life beyond racing.
“My biggest motivation now is to take my children on a good path and be more present in their lives,” he revealed, emphasizing the importance of family after years spent prioritizing racing. "I am very excited to be with my family because in F1 you only think about being a better driver; you don’t have time for anything else."
As he embraces this new chapter, Perez mentioned he is looking forward to spending quality time with his son, Sergio Perez Junior, particularly as they prepare for an upcoming soccer tournament in Mexico. "My biggest motivation is that we do well in his tournament, that I can enjoy it a lot with my son," he shared, highlighting his renewed focus on family.
Looking ahead, Perez’s next steps remain uncertain but promising. His experience and success in Formula 1 still position him as a valuable asset in the sport. Whether he decides to chase a return to racing or embrace new adventures in family life, fans and observers will undoubtedly keep a close eye on his journey in the coming months.
