Starting from pole position, Sainz managed to convert the advantage into a win, demonstrating exemplary skill on the track.
"Winning in Mexico is something special," said Sainz. His performance not only showcased his talents but also revitalized Ferrari's position within the ongoing championship.
Sainz's fellow podium finishers included McLaren's Lando Norris, who fought valiantly against Red Bull's Max Verstappen. Norris initially found himself embroiled in a fierce battle with Verstappen, ultimately securing second place with a time of +4.705 seconds behind Sainz. "It was a tough race, but I'm happy with my performance and how we managed the car," said Norris after the race.
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc rounded out the podium, finishing third with a time of +34.387 seconds. Leclerc praised his team’s efforts, saying, "We worked hard this weekend, and it shows in the results. We're making progress."
The race also featured intense competition among Mercedes teammates Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. Hamilton led Russell home, finishing fourth and fifth respectively, with Hamilton expressing satisfaction over their duel: "It was great racing with George. We pushed each other hard, which always brings out the best in both of us."
Max Verstappen's race took a downturn as he faced a 20-second penalty due to his earlier battle with Norris and ended in sixth place, marking one of his lowest finishes of the season. "It’s frustrating to finish like this after the year we’ve had, but we’ll come back stronger," Verstappen said.
Haas driver Kevin Magnussen delivered an impressive performance, finishing seventh, while McLaren's Oscar Piastri climbed from a poor qualifying position to finish eighth. Piastri noted, "We didn’t start as we hoped, but I’m proud of how we fought back."
Completing the top ten were Nico Hulkenberg and Pierre Gasly, with Hulkenberg stating, "Seventh was a solid result for us, and we've been improving consistently."
The race results reshaped the 2024 Drivers’ Championship standings. Max Verstappen remains in the lead with 362 points, while Lando Norris has closed the gap to second with 315 points. Charles Leclerc sits in third with 291, followed by Oscar Piastri at 251 points and Carlos Sainz with 240 points. The intense competition has created a thrilling chase as the season progresses.
The Constructors' Championship also saw shifts, with McLaren at the top with 566 points, just ahead of Ferrari at 537 and Red Bull at 512. Mercedes was positioned fourth with 366 points.
