Nico Rosberg delivered a remarkable performance at the 2016 Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix, narrowly defeating Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo by a mere 0.4 seconds. This victory allowed Rosberg to reclaim the top spot in the championship standings, moving eight points ahead of his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton, who finished in third place.
Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen came close to claiming a podium finish, while his teammate, Sebastian Vettel, earned the Driver of the Day title from fans after starting from the back of the grid and finishing fifth. Max Verstappen drove impressively for Red Bull, securing sixth place, ahead of McLaren's Fernando Alonso, with Sergio Perez, Daniil Kvyat, and Kevin Magnussen rounding out the top ten.
The race was filled with early drama. As Rosberg entered the first corner alongside Ricciardo, Hamilton, and Raikkonen, Max Verstappen experienced a sluggish start. Carlos Sainz's Toro Rosso collided with Nico Hulkenberg's Force India, resulting in a spin that sent Hulkenberg crashing into the pit wall. Following this incident, the safety car was deployed, catching some teams off guard when it returned after just two laps.
While Rosberg maintained his lead over Ricciardo, Hamilton faced challenges with brake temperatures throughout the race. Despite having a similar issue, Rosberg managed his situation better thanks to the clean air ahead of him. The race settled into a rhythm until Raikkonen overtook Hamilton on lap 33, taking advantage of his supersoft tires compared to Hamilton's softs. "I made a mistake; it wasn't an ideal race for me," said Hamilton after the race.
Hamilton briefly took the lead on lap 34, but after another round of pit stops, he dropped back down. It was Rosberg's strategic acumen that allowed him to extend his lead while controlling tire wear. Mercedes implemented a change in strategy for Hamilton, permitting him to push hard with new soft tires, resulting in him closing in on Raikkonen, who pitted shortly after.
Despite appearing to have the race in hand with a 25.8-second lead by lap 48, Rosberg faced a challenge as he ran into traffic. The team's decision to not pit him allowed Ricciardo to dramatically reduce the gap, with the Australian closing in by as much as three seconds per lap. The tension increased as Ricciardo's speed surged, and Rosberg was thrust into a fight for the victory in the closing laps.
By lap 56, the gap had shrunk to 5.2 seconds, and it continued to decline with lap times that had Ricciardo gaining ground swiftly. "I was pushing as hard as I could. Every lap I thought I had a chance," Ricciardo remarked after the race. Rosberg, however, managed to fend off the late advances, especially with tire management playing a crucial role.
As they approached the final lap, Ricciardo continued to catch Rosberg, but despite his best efforts, he could not pull off a dramatic last-corner pass. Rosberg crossed the finish line 0.4 seconds ahead, marking the first victory for a non-champion in Singapore and his eighth win of the season. With 273 points in the standings, he sits ahead of Hamilton’s 265 points.
Vettel's climb from last place to fifth showcased his driving skill, earning him the Driver of the Day title as he crossed the line strongly. Verstappen's race was characterized by aggressive overtaking moves, illustrating his talent as he maneuvered from eighth to sixth.
Fernando Alonso's seventh place finish saw him contend for fifth early in the race, while Perez and Kvyat put up a tight fight for eighth place, with Perez managing to edge out Kvyat by just four-tenths of a second after starting in 17th position. Magnussen rounded out the points for Renault, completing a challenging race filled with strategic battles and intense competition.
As the season progresses, the stakes are higher than ever as Rosberg's narrow victory has set the stage for a gripping championship race. With just a handful of races remaining, the pressure mounts not only on Rosberg and Hamilton but also on the entire grid as they prepare for future contests.
