Formula 1 has made a significant announcement confirming Pirelli as the exclusive tyre supplier for the championship until 2027. This decision comes after a competitive bid process that included rival Bridgestone, highlighting the ongoing evolution of tyre technology in the motorsport.
F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali expressed his appreciation for Pirelli’s continuous contributions since their return to the sport in 2011. "Since returning to the sport in 2011, Pirelli has been an invaluable partner," said Domenicali. "Supporting Formula 1 through new generations of technology and technical regulations and delivering tyres to enable fantastic racing for our fans."
This new contract not only extends Pirelli's tenure in Formula 1 but also encompasses Formula 2 and Formula 3. By the end of this deal, Pirelli will have been the sole tyre supplier in the sport for 18 seasons. Moreover, executives are emphasizing sustainability as a critical focus moving forward, an aspect reflected in the company's plans.
Domenicali mentioned the importance of Pirelli's commitment to sustainability, pointing out that they have received FSC certification as part of their efforts towards reducing the sport's carbon footprint. "The work Pirelli is focused on relating to sustainability, proven by the FSC certification, will ensure we continue to work together towards our shared Net Zero 2030 goal," he noted.
On Pirelli’s side, Marco Tronchetti Provera, the executive vice president and CEO, stated the firm is thrilled by the decision to continue its relationship with F1. "We’re delighted to extend our presence in Formula 1 and its other related championships," said Provera. "Pirelli was there when Formula 1 was born in 1950, and with this latest renewal, the firm will now be a protagonist throughout nearly two decades of the modern Formula 1 era."
Provera also praised the role of Liberty Media and the FIA in enhancing the sport's growth, articulating, "Thanks to the impetus from Liberty Media and the support of the FIA, the sport is enjoying an extraordinary period of growth both in terms of audience and global expansion, increasing its following among younger generations as well."
Innovation remains crucial to Pirelli as they prepare to implement new tyre technologies. “Innovation and technology are locked into Pirelli’s DNA, and Formula 1 constitutes the ultimate open-air laboratory to not only try out and test new technical solutions, but also to accelerate fresh research, development, and production processes in making tyres,” Provera added.
Bridgestone's bid for the tyre supplier role was noteworthy; the company previously held that position from 2007 to 2010 before Pirelli took over. Bridgestone's recent attempt to return to the F1 landscape underscored their long history with the sport, especially given their previous rivalry with Michelin during the tyre wars.
Despite the outcome, Domenicali acknowledged Bridgestone's effort, highlighting their impressive proposal. "I would also like to commend Bridgestone for their impressive proposal and engagement throughout the process. They have a proud legacy in our sport, and I would like to thank them for their highly professional and passionate engagement with us," he stated.
As Formula 1 heads into a new chapter with Pirelli at the forefront, the sport is poised for exciting developments related to tyre technology and sustainability. The partnership aligns closely with F1's broader ambitions for innovation and environmental responsibility, setting the stage for a competitive and eco-conscious future in motorsport.
