In a race marked by unpredictable weather and challenging conditions, Oscar Piastri emerged victorious at the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix. The event, plagued by heavy rain and poor visibility, was delayed for nearly an hour and a half before finally getting underway at 4:20 PM local time. Starting behind the Safety Car, the drivers faced treacherous conditions as they navigated the wet track.
Once the race commenced in earnest on Lap 5, Piastri wasted no time in seizing the lead. "I had a great start and felt confident going into Kemmel Straight," said Piastri after crossing the finish line. He swiftly overtook his McLaren teammate Lando Norris amidst the spray, solidifying his position as the dominant driver of the day.
Piastri's performance at Spa-Francorchamps was exceptional, ultimately clinching his sixth victory of the season. "It feels amazing to extend my lead in the championship," he added, reflecting on the win which increased his points advantage over Norris to 16. This victory comes in the wake of consecutive defeats to his teammate at Austria and Silverstone, making it even more significant.
Following Piastri and Norris were Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen, who battled for the remaining podium spots. Leclerc skillfully defended against Verstappen's early advances to secure third place. "We had a strong race, but the conditions were tricky out there," Leclerc remarked, indicating the challenges faced by all competitors in the wet conditions.
George Russell from Mercedes finished fifth, putting in a solid performance to ensure his team's competitive standing. Behind him, Alex Albon of Williams crossed the line in sixth, fending off a charging Lewis Hamilton who had started from the pit lane following a disappointing qualifying session.
Hamilton's comeback drive was one of the race highlights. "It was tough starting from the back, but I managed to navigate my way through the pack," he said after finishing seventh. The seven-time world champion proved his mettle by executing numerous overtakes during the 44-lap race as conditions gradually improved from wet to dry.
Liam Lawson from Racing Bulls and Gabriel Bortoleto of Sauber rounded out the top ten, with Lawson finishing in eighth and Bortoleto securing ninth place. Pierre Gasly finished in tenth for Alpine, marking the final point of the day. Gasly shared his thoughts: "A point is a point, and every position matters at this stage of the season."
The race underscored McLaren's competitive edge, with both Piastri and Norris performing exceptionally under pressure. Norris expressed his thoughts on the race, saying, "It was frustrating to lose the lead, but Oscar drove a fantastic race. We'll regroup for the next challenge."
As the championship heats up, Piastri's dominant display in Belgium has set the tone for the remainder of the season. The outcome not only strengthens his title ambitions but also raises the stakes for his rivals, including Norris and Leclerc, who are determined to close the gap in the standings.
