Oscar Piastri has solidified his long-term commitment to McLaren, calling it a "no-brainer" during a press conference in Melbourne ahead of the Australian Grand Prix.
The 23-year-old driver, who was already signed until 2026, has added a multi-year extension to his contract. Piastri expressed satisfaction with his decision, stating, "It felt like just a very natural progression to sign for even longer term."
Reflecting on the team's remarkable performance last season, Piastri noted, "Obviously last year was an incredible year for the team. I think my two years for the team has been pretty incredible, starting from where we were when I joined to being constructors' champions."
This long-term commitment aligns with McLaren's broader strategy to secure stability among its leadership and talent. His teammate, Lando Norris, has also signed a long-term deal, as have key figures in the organization, such as McLaren's principal Andrea Stella and chief executive Zak Brown.
In the previous season, Piastri showcased his talent by finishing fourth overall, bolstered by impressive victories in Hungary and Azerbaijan. As the 2025 season unfolds, both he and Norris are expected to be fierce contenders, with McLaren regarded as a strong competitor in the current grid. The duo’s success last season led to McLaren capturing its first constructors' championship since 1998.
Nonetheless, Piastri remains cautious about his chances in his hometown race. When asked about expectations for his performance in Melbourne, he said, "I know what you want me to say, and everyone's headline could be that, but we'll see. No one really knows what to expect. Testing went pretty well, but you don't know where everybody sits."
The anticipation for the upcoming race is palpable, particularly given Piastri's home advantage and the expectations that come with it. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how he will translate last season's momentum into this year's competitive landscape.
As Piastri prepares for the challenge ahead, he and his team must navigate the unknowns of race day in Melbourne. With the recent contract extension on their minds, goals are set high, but the young driver is keen to temper expectations as they gear up for the race.
Looking ahead, the collaboration between Piastri and McLaren appears poised for success in the 2025 Formula 1 season, with hopes that they can build on last year's achievements. The commitment from both parties signals a bright future, but as Piastri wisely noted, racing is unpredictable, making the pathway to victory both thrilling and uncertain.
