Lando Norris delivered an impressive performance in Qualifying for the 2025 Mexico City Grand Prix, securing pole position ahead of notable competitors Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.
Competing in Mexico City on October 25, Norris, driving for McLaren, displayed exceptional speed throughout the session. After setting a fast pace in Q2, the British driver faced an initial challenge when Ferrari's Leclerc posted a provisional pole time during the early runs of Q3. However, Norris quickly moved to reclaim the lead, clocking a rapid time of 1:15.586.
"It felt great! The car was unbelievable, and I was able to push it to the limit on the last lap," said Norris after his remarkable run. His effort was a full 0.262 seconds quicker than Leclerc's best effort, showcasing his remarkable talent and the capabilities of his car.
Hamilton rounded out the top three with a strong performance for Mercedes, finishing with a time of 1:15.938. “We put in a solid effort, but it was not quite enough today,” remarked Hamilton, highlighting the competitive nature of the event. Behind him, George Russell secured P4, followed closely by reigning champion Max Verstappen in P5.
Oscar Piastri, Norris's McLaren teammate, had a more challenging outing, finishing the session in eighth place, nearly eight-tenths behind Norris. Meanwhile, Isack Hadjar of Racing Bulls and Ollie Bearman from Haas completed the top 10. Piastri empathized, saying, “It was a tough session for me, but we’ll work on it ahead of the race.”
Unfortunate for Yuki Tsunoda, the Red Bull driver barely missed out on Q3, finishing in P11, just 0.014 seconds shy of entering the crucial top 10 shootout. Tsunoda commented, “It’s frustrating to be so close, but we’ll regroup and focus on the race.”
Esteban Ocon from Haas and Nico Hulkenberg from Kick Sauber were eliminated in Q2, finishing P12 and P13 respectively. Veteran driver Fernando Alonso saw his efforts result in a P14 finish, a disappointing placement for the Aston Martin team.
Looking at the overall qualifying picture, Liam Lawson struggled to set a competitive time, leaving him in 15th position. “There were a few things that didn’t go our way today, but we’ll aim to improve,” Lawson remarked after the session.
As the session concluded, the back half of the grid saw Gabriel Bortoleto in P16, Alex Albon in P17, and Pierre Gasly in P18, while Lance Stroll and Franco Colapinto rounded out the lineup in 19th and 20th, respectively.
The stage is set for what promises to be an exhilarating race on Sunday, October 29. "Now we focus on the race. It's a long one, and anything can happen," concluded Norris, setting the tone for the upcoming main event. With a competitive grid and high stakes, the Mexico City Grand Prix is certain to deliver excitement for fans and drivers alike.
