In a significant move for its Formula 1 ambitions, McLaren has announced a multi-year contract extension for rising star Oscar Piastri. This agreement comes just ahead of the 2025 season and ensures that Piastri will remain part of the McLaren team, solidifying their plans for the future.
Piastri, who made his Formula 1 debut with McLaren in 2023 after transitioning from Alpine’s academy, has quickly established himself as a formidable competitor. He has garnered attention with impressive podium finishes during his rookie season, even achieving his first two career victories in Hungary and Azerbaijan. His performance helped him secure a respectable fourth place in the Drivers’ Championship, while also playing an instrumental role in McLaren’s success in the Constructors’ Championship.
The previous contract for Piastri was set to conclude after the 2026 season, but McLaren decided to extend his stay even further. This decision was officially communicated on Wednesday in Melbourne, coinciding with the anticipation of Piastri’s home race, which marks the beginning of a new season.

McLaren’s CEO, Zak Brown, expressed confidence in Piastri's abilities, stating, "Not only is he an incredibly talented driver, but his work ethic and cultural fit within the team made it a no-brainer to extend his time in papaya." Piastri himself expressed his gratitude and enthusiasm about the extension, stating, "It’s a great feeling knowing that I’m part of McLaren’s long-term vision. The team had the belief in me when we signed in 2022, and the journey we’ve gone on over the past two seasons to help return McLaren to the very top of the sport has been incredible."
He further conveyed his excitement by adding, "I’m excited to fight for the big prizes as a McLaren driver and after last year’s fantastic achievements, it has made me even hungrier to stay at the sharp end."
