Lando Norris, the talented British driver, has officially signed a new contract with McLaren, a deal that the team claims will keep him until at least the end of 2026. Previously under contract through 2025, Norris's extension solidifies his commitment to the Woking-based team amid interest from rival squads.
"Committing to McLaren was quite an easy decision," Norris stated, displaying a sense of loyalty and belief in the team’s progress. The 24-year-old driver is not just an asset for McLaren; he also sees it as a second family that provided him with his big break into Formula 1.
Norris has experienced a remarkable journey with McLaren, particularly noting their impressive performance during the latter half of the 2023 season. After starting the season with a car considered one of the slowest, a pivotal upgrade during the Austrian Grand Prix catalyzed an impressive turnaround. From that point on, Norris emerged as the second-highest scoring driver, trailing only the dominant world champion Max Verstappen.
Reflecting on the recent changes, Norris emphasized the importance of the leadership transformation at McLaren, thanks to new team principal Andrea Stella, who took the reins in December 2022. "The turnaround was a big part of it," Norris explained, acknowledging the tough times endured in recent years. "Every driver has [questions about their future]. But with how we and Andrea turned things around... that swings it in the direction at McLaren because it is also results-led."
The emotional connection Norris feels towards McLaren is profound—he views it as the team that started his journey in F1. Nevertheless, he admitted that had McLaren not shown significant improvement, he might have waited until 2025 before making any decisions about his future. "There are not many other things you can be guaranteed or assured of with any other teams," he commented, underscoring his quest for a competitive environment conducive to success. "But now I am more confident than ever in saying it’s going to be McLaren."
Despite attracting interest from Red Bull and discussions with various other teams, Norris felt no substantial incentive to pursue alternative opportunities. "Everyone speaks to everyone," he said, clarifying that conversations with other teams never escalated into serious negotiations. "Really, nothing from any other side was convincing enough to make me want to have a proper look at another team. I want to be part of this story of turning things around."
The term of Norris's new contract remains undisclosed, but insiders believe it is likely to extend until at least the end of 2027. Such a partnership signalizes a deep commitment between a driver and team, a reflection of both faith in the future and the impacts of their recent performances.
"Lando has grown as a driver and a person since initially joining McLaren in 2017," stated Andrea Stella. He praised Norris's contributions, listing his seven podium finishes last season as evidence of his capable leadership within the team. "Our exciting driver pairing will play an instrumental part in our objective to move towards the front of the grid."
Oscar Piastri, Norris's teammate, is also under contract with McLaren until the end of 2026, following a successful rookie season that saw the team exercise its option on him mid-season.
Norris’s renewed commitment signals a significant moment in the Formula 1 landscape as he chooses to stay with a team making strides rather than exploring potentially riskier opportunities. The decision reinforces the team’s ambitions as they aim to close the gap to the front of the grid, setting an exciting stage for the upcoming seasons. As teams continue to position themselves for success, Norris's loyalty adds an intriguing layer to the dynamics of the driver market.
