In a significant move for both Lando Norris and McLaren Racing, the team announced on Friday that they have reached a multi-year contract extension. Previously scheduled to conclude at the end of the 2025 season, Norris will remain with the McLaren team as it transitions into the next set of regulations in 2026.
The announcement came through a social media video, emphasizing the importance of this partnership for both sides.
"I’m delighted that we’re continuing our relationship with Lando for multiple years to come. It’s been a fantastic journey over the last six years, and he has shown fantastic commitment and desire to push the team forward and get McLaren back to the front of the grid," said Zak Brown, McLaren's CEO.
The renewed contract highlights the role Norris played in a successful past season, where his efforts contributed significantly to the team's resurgence.
"Last season we saw the fundamental role Lando played with the impressive turnaround in results and I’m looking forward to continuing this push forward together with lots more podiums," Brown added.
Andrea Stella, McLaren's Team Principal, also expressed optimism regarding this extension, saying, "I’m pleased to confirm the extension of our partnership with Lando on a multi-year contract beyond 2025. This reflects the commitment and confidence we have together, with our shared ambition to ultimately win championships again in the future."
Norris first joined McLaren in 2017 and has matured into a leading driver. His performance last season was noteworthy, achieving seven podium finishes, and showing a consistent drive throughout. Stella remarked, "Lando has grown as a driver and a person since initially joining McLaren in 2017. He impressed last season, playing an important role in our progress throughout the year, securing seven podiums with many fantastic drives."
With the partnership formally extended, the focus shifts to the future. Stella mentioned the pivotal role of both Norris and his teammate, Oscar Piastri. "Alongside Oscar, our exciting driver pairing will play an instrumental part in our objective to move towards the front of the grid. They have impressed in their first season together and I’m looking forward to continuing the hard work with them both on this exciting journey," he explained.
Back in October, Brown had expressed confidence in this young duo, stating that McLaren boasts the best driver pairing on the grid. Both Norris and Piastri were crucial to the team's ascent in the Constructors’ standings, particularly after overcoming a sluggish start to the season. Some upgrades to the MCL60, in combination with their talents, allowed McLaren to rise to a fourth-place finish that year.
As both Norris and Piastri have now solidified their commitments through at least 2026, McLaren is poised to aim even higher in the championship standings. This strategic continuity demonstrates the team's intent to enhance their competitiveness in the evolving landscape of Formula 1.
With their sights set on future victories, McLaren's latest contract extension with Norris represents not just stability but a commitment to growth and success in the championship ahead. The 2026 regulations bring fresh opportunities, and with a solid lineup of drivers, McLaren is gearing up for a new chapter in its storied history.
