George Russell delivered an impressive performance at the 2025 Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix, securing pole position amid a competitive field. The Mercedes driver endured a brush with the wall during the session but rebounded strongly, clocking a lap time that ultimately outpaced his nearest rival, Max Verstappen, by 0.182 seconds.
“Today was amazing. I felt confident, even after hitting the wall, which gave me a little scare,” said Russell. “I just tried to focus on the laps and not let that affect me. Getting pole here is extremely special.”
The intense qualifying session, held under the luminous lights of Singapore, proved to be a test of skill and endurance. Oscar Piastri, the current championship leader, came in third, 0.366 seconds off the pace. “We were competitive, but not fast enough. We'll analyze what we can improve for the race,” Piastri commented after the session.
Kimi Antonelli, also driving for Mercedes, showcased his potential by claiming fourth place. “It was a strong session for us as a team, and I’m delighted to be starting from the second row,” Antonelli said.
Meanwhile, McLaren’s Lando Norris secured fifth position, showing consistent performance throughout the qualifying rounds. Lewis Hamilton, racing for Ferrari, managed to outqualify his teammate Charles Leclerc to secure sixth on the grid.
“It was a good effort from the team, but we’re still about half a second off where we want to be,” Hamilton stated, expressing his hopes for the race. “We’ll keep pushing and see what we can achieve.”
“It’s good to see some other teams stepping up. This season has been unpredictable, and every position matters,” Alonso remarked.
Nico Hulkenberg narrowly missed a spot in Q3, placing 11th for Sauber, with the doubles of Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz finishing just behind him. “We had the pace but couldn’t capitalize when it mattered,” said Hulkenberg, reflecting on his performance.
Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson finished in 14th, while Yuki Tsunoda experienced a disappointing qualifying, ending up in 15th after getting eliminated in Q2. “We just didn’t have the speed. It’s frustrating, but we’ll keep working hard,” Tsunoda noted.
Gabriel Bortoleto and Lance Stroll struggled significantly, finishing 16th and 17th respectively, while Franco Colapinto brought up the rear in 18th for Alpine. Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly faced their own challenges, with Gasly’s car failing at Turn 11 during Q1, which left him in 20th.
Russell’s rapid lap times were recorded as follows: 1m29.928s in Q1, 1m29.562s in Q2, and an outstanding 1m29.158s in Q3, establishing him firmly at the forefront of this thrilling night race.
The stage is set for an exhilarating race in Singapore, with Russell’s pole position indicating he will be a fierce competitor against the likes of Verstappen and Piastri. As the teams strategize for the event, fans eagerly anticipate how the unique night circuit will impact their performances under pressure.
