George Russell emerged triumphant in the qualifying session for the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix, clinching pole position with a rapid final lap of 1m 32.312s. This impressive performance places the Mercedes driver at the forefront of the race, showcasing his abilities just days after dominating the final practice session.
"That was a really great session for us," said Russell following his qualifying victory. "I had the confidence from the practice sessions, and I felt comfortable pushing to get the best time." His determination clearly paid off as he outpaced his closest competitor, Carlos Sainz, by just a tenth of a second.
Sainz, driving for Ferrari, posted a time of 1m 32.410s, indicating a strong effort but ultimately falling short of overtaking Russell. "We had a good car, but George did an incredible job," Sainz acknowledged, hinting at the fierce competition between drivers this season.
Pierre Gasly, representing Alpine, continued his team’s momentum with a solid performance, finishing third with a time of 1m 32.664s. "After our double podium in Brazil, we were confident, and it’s great to see that reflected once again," said Gasly, who has been a standout performer this season.
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who secured fourth place with a time of 1m 32.783s, remains a contender in the championship but expressed the need for better performance. "We have potential, but we need to find those extra tenths for the race," Leclerc stated.
The session occurred following a dramatic end to the previous race in Brazil, where multiple crashes left teams and drivers on edge. Franco Colapinto faced another setback during qualifying, encountering a crash that resulted in a debris-strewn track and ultimately placing him in 14th. "It’s really disappointing to have these issues again, but we'll bounce back," Colapinto lamented.
Esteban Ocon narrowly missed out on Q3, finishing 11th, while Kevin Magnussen from Haas and Zhou Guanyu from Kick Sauber rounded out the top 13. Williams' Alex Albon struggled in the early stages, finishing in 18th due to a lost lap time, while Valtteri Bottas will start in 19th due to an engine-related penalty.
Sergio Perez faced a particularly tough qualifying session, ultimately placing 16th. "The car just wasn’t responding today; it’s frustrating to be in this position again," he shared, reflecting on yet another early exit from Q1.
Aston Martin had a challenging day as well, with Fernando Alonso finishing in 17th and Lance Stroll limited to a single timed lap due to a power unit change post-practice.
As the anticipation builds for the race, Russell's performance places him in a favorable position to claim victory. "Starting on pole at a track like this is always special, and I’m eager to convert it into a win," Russell emphasized. With the stage set for an exhilarating race on the Las Vegas Strip, all eyes will be on the drivers as they battle for supremacy.
Looking ahead, the dynamics of the race could shift with unpredictable strategies and weather conditions, keeping fans and teams alike on their toes as they gear up for what promises to be an exciting race day.
