Mercedes has resolved months of speculation regarding their driver lineup by confirming George Russell and Kimi Antonelli for the 2026 Formula 1 season. The announcement coincided with the arrival of the teams in Austin for the United States Grand Prix, a fitting backdrop for unveiling this important decision.
"Confirming our driver line-up was always just a matter of when, not if. We wanted to take our time, handle the negotiations properly and make sure everyone, on all sides, was happy," said Team Principal Toto Wolff. He expressed satisfaction with the continuity, particularly highlighting the successful pairing of Russell and Antonelli.
Russell, who is currently enjoying what many consider to be his best season, expressed pride in the team’s journey. "I am really proud to be continuing our journey together. Next year will mark my 10th since I signed with Mercedes back in 2017. It has been such a long and successful partnership with the team so far and I can’t wait to see what lies ahead," he stated. For Russell, the upcoming season will coincide with significant regulatory changes in Formula 1, which he believes is an exciting opportunity for the team.
Currently, Russell has achieved two grand prix victories this season, including his latest triumph at the Singapore Grand Prix. He stands fourth in the Drivers’ Championship standings, buoyed by eight podium finishes this year, matching his career highs.
Kimi Antonelli, the rookie sensation who made waves upon entering the circuit, also expressed his enthusiasm for the renewed contract. "I’m super excited to be continuing with the team. I’ve learnt so much in my first season in F1, both in the good moments and the more challenging ones. Those have all made me stronger, not only as a driver but as a team-mate too," said Antonelli.
He noted the team’s ongoing battle with Ferrari for second place in the Constructors’ Championship, emphasizing their commitment to finish the season strong. "Our focus now is to finish this year strongly and secure second in the Constructors’ Championship, before we then turn our full attention to 2026," he added, demonstrating a strong team-oriented mindset.
As it stands, Mercedes sits 27 points ahead of Ferrari in the Constructors' race as they head into the final six races of the season. Russell, in the last year of his contract, and Antonelli, on a one-year deal, are both eager to solidify their positions amidst the competitive landscape.
The confirmation of Russell and Antonelli leaves several seats open for the upcoming season, including positions at Alpine next to Pierre Gasly, at Red Bull alongside Max Verstappen, and two spots at Visa Cash App Racing Bulls, adding intrigue to the driver market.
As the weekend unfolds in Austin for the United States Grand Prix, fans and analysts alike are looking forward to the final stretch of the 2025 season and the implications for 2026 and beyond. Mercedes aims to leverage its current momentum to secure its competitive advantage as F1 embarks on a new era.
