As the anticipation builds for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix this weekend, Ferrari has made a significant announcement regarding its team dynamics. The iconic Scuderia Ferrari confirmed the recruitment of Jerome d’Ambrosio and Loic Serra, both prominent figures from its rival, Mercedes.
Loic Serra is poised to take on the vital role of Head of Chassis Performance Engineering. He will work under Enrico Cardile and will oversee multiple areas within the team in Maranello, including Track Engineering, Aero Development, Aero Operations, and Vehicle Performance. "It's a pleasure to join a team with such a rich heritage and strong ambitions," said Serra.
Born in France in 1972, Serra comes to Ferrari with a robust background in mechanical engineering. He studied in Aix-en-Provence and Paris, and prior to his time in Formula One, he worked for Michelin. His career in F1 includes stints with both BMW-Sauber and Mercedes AMG, where he honed his expertise in performance engineering.
In addition to Serra, Ferrari has created a pivotal new position for Jerome d’Ambrosio as the Deputy Team Principal. Reporting directly to team principal Fred Vasseur, d'Ambrosio will play a crucial role in team operations. His responsibilities extend to becoming the Head of the Scuderia Ferrari Driver Academy, where he aims to nurture the next generation of racing talent.
"I am thrilled to be part of Ferrari and bring my experience to the Driver Academy. I look forward to working closely with the young drivers and the whole Ferrari family," stated d’Ambrosio, who previously enjoyed a successful career as a driver, including notable performances in GP2 and Formula E.
D’Ambrosio, who hails from Belgium and was born in 1985, showcased his racing skills in 20 Formula 1 Grands Prix between 2011 and 2012. His most recent role at Mercedes involved collaboration with Team Principal Toto Wolff in the development of their young driver program, giving him a wealth of experience that he will now apply at Ferrari.
Both Serra and d’Ambrosio are currently on gardening leave from Mercedes, marking a strategic recruitment as Ferrari seeks to further enhance its competitive edge. They are expected to officially start their new roles at the Scuderia on October 1, 2024, allowing some time for transition and planning ahead of the upcoming racing seasons.
"Scuderia Ferrari is pleased to announce it is further strengthening the team with the arrival of Loic Serra and Jerome d’Ambrosio," the team announced on social media, reflecting a strong commitment to building a more formidable structure as it navigates the complexities of modern Formula One.
As both tech and driver development take center stage in the competitive world of Formula One, the addition of these experienced individuals serves as a reassuring sign of Ferrari's ambitions for the future. With a renewed focus on performance engineering and driver development, fans and experts alike will be watching closely to see how this key leadership shift impacts Ferrari's trajectory in upcoming seasons.
