Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc has expressed his enthusiasm after inking a new contract with the team, stating he is "pleased" to extend his tenure for "several more seasons to come." The 26-year-old Monegasque talent has committed to a stronger future with the iconic racing team, emphasizing his long-standing dream of racing for Ferrari.

Leclerc made his Formula 1 debut with Sauber in 2018, but it was with Ferrari that he really made his mark. After an impressive rookie campaign, he secured a five-year deal with the Prancing Horse in 2019. Last season, he concluded the championship in fifth place, showcasing his skills in a challenging environment. "To race for this team has been my dream since I was three years old," he said. "I used to watch the Monaco Grand Prix from the window of a friend’s apartment at Saint Devote corner and I would always look out for the red cars."

Throughout his time with Ferrari, Leclerc has formed a familial bond with the team. "This team is my second family ever since I joined the Ferrari driver academy in 2016 and we have achieved a lot together, fighting through thick and thin over the past five years," he shared. Leclerc has aspirations that extend beyond mere participation; he aims for success. "However, I believe the best is yet to come, and I can’t wait for this season to start, to make further progress and be competitive at every race," he emphasized, reaffirming his ultimate goal of winning the World Championship with Ferrari.

The specific duration of Leclerc's new contract has not been disclosed, although it is understood that it extends beyond 2024, potentially lasting five years until 2029. Financially, Leclerc's remuneration is expected to increase significantly; his current salary of €25 million ($21.3 million) is projected to rise to €50 million ($42.6 million) by the contract’s end.

Leclerc has made his mark with Ferrari, boasting five race victories and 23 pole positions. His standout year came in 2022 when he finished second in the drivers’ championship while securing three Grand Prix wins.

Ferrari’s team principal Fred Vasseur highlighted the alignment of values between Leclerc and the team as a driving force behind the contract extension. "His values and those of our team are intertwined and so it was natural for us to be in agreement on extending our collaboration," Vasseur stated. He praised Leclerc's relentless pursuit of excellence, acknowledging his skilled overtaking and racing capabilities. "We are determined to give Charles a winning car, and I know that his determination and commitment are elements that can make the difference in helping us reach our goals," Vasseur added.

Analysis by Chief F1 writer Andrew Benson indicated that Leclerc's decision to re-sign was anticipated. Leclerc had frequently conveyed his commitment to a Ferrari future, underscoring that this contract was not born out of necessity but rather a mutual aspiration. He stands among the brightest stars in Formula 1, with speculation that he may be one of the fastest drivers during qualifying laps. His loyalty could see him remain with Ferrari until after his 30th birthday as he believes the team is on a path toward success.

Despite Leclerc's confidence, some fans remain wary due to Ferrari's tumultuous history in recent seasons. The last time the team secured a drivers' title was back in 2007 with Kimi Raikkonen, and influential moments were missed under previous leadership, most notably during the seasons when Fernando Alonso lost narrowly to Sebastian Vettel in 2010 and 2012. Moreover, Leclerc's near-championship challenge in 2022 fell apart due to reliability issues and operational shortcomings, leading to significant personnel changes in the team.

Leclerc found himself navigating a difficult 2023 season where progress was evident as Ferrari made strides in car handling and performance. By the end of the season, Leclerc's car showed competitive pace, particularly in qualifying, mirroring the dominant form of Red Bull Racing. This resurgence brought a sense of renewed optimism for the Ferrari faithful as Leclerc leads the charge toward future successes.

As Leclerc embarks on this extended journey with Ferrari, both driver and team are positioned on the precipice of potential greatness, aiming to transform aspirations into reality in the coming seasons.
