The 2024 United States Grand Prix, officially named the Formula 1 Pirelli United States Grand Prix 2024, took place on October 20 at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. As the nineteenth round of the 2024 Formula One World Championship, the race weekend marked the fourth instance this season utilizing the sprint format.
Max Verstappen from Red Bull Racing kicked off the event by claiming pole position for the sprint race on Saturday. "It was a good session, and I felt confident going into the sprint," said Verstappen. He went on to win that event, finishing ahead of Carlos Sainz Jr. of Ferrari and Lando Norris from McLaren.
For the main race on Sunday, Lando Norris secured pole, but the outcome of the race unfolded in an unexpected manner. Charles Leclerc driving for Ferrari executed an impressive race strategy, overtaking Norris to secure his position while Sainz followed closely behind, resulting in a Ferrari 1-2 finish. "This is a fantastic result for the team, and I'm proud to be part of it," praised Sainz after the race.
The significance of Ferrari's victory cannot be understated; it was their first 1-2 finish in the United States since 2006 and marked their first win in American soil since 2018 when Kimi Räikkönen triumphed.
However, the race was not without its complications for Norris. Despite crossing the finish line in third, he faced late-race penalties and ultimately dropped to fourth place. "I thought I had it, but things turned out differently. It’s part of the game," Norris reflected on his performance.
Max Verstappen, who attempted to battle Norris for the third position, was then elevated back up to third place following the penalty awarded to Norris. Verstappen stated, "We did everything we could, but it was a challenging race. The points matter, and we’re still in the fight."
Esteban Ocon from Alpine, while not in contention for a podium finish, impressed with the fastest lap of the race at 1:37.330. However, his eighteenth-place finish meant he was ineligible to receive the bonus point for that achievement. "It’s a bit bittersweet. The pace was there, but the results didn’t reflect that," Ocon commented.
The event drew a crowd of 430,000 fans, showcasing the continued popularity of Formula 1 in the United States. The weather conditions remained sunny throughout the weekend, providing an ideal backdrop for racing.
Prior to the race, the championship standings indicated Verstappen at the forefront with 331 points, maintaining a lead of 52 points over Norris and 86 points ahead of Leclerc. McLaren entered this round leading the Constructors' Championship, holding 516 points against Red Bull Racing with 475 points and Ferrari at 441 points.
As expectations built for the weekend, fans were eager to see how the driver and team dynamics would play out, particularly after the recent changes in team line-ups. Franco Colapinto had taken over from Logan Sargeant at Williams, while Liam Lawson stepped in for Daniel Ricciardo, highlighting the ongoing evolution within the teams this season.
Looking ahead, the 2024 United States Grand Prix provided crucial insights into the championship’s trajectory as drivers gear up for the remaining rounds of the season. Ferrari’s powerful showing may serve as a catalyst for competition as McLaren and Red Bull Racing look to respond in the next sets of races, tightening what is sure to be an exhilarating championship fight.
