The 2021 Rome ePrix featured an intense weekend of motorsports, taking place on April 10 and 11 at the Circuito Cittadino dell'EUR, situated in the EUR district of Italy's capital. This double-header event represented both the third and fourth races of the 2020-21 Formula E season and was the third edition of the Rome ePrix.
In the first of the two races, Jean-Éric Vergne climbed to victory, pushing his Techeetah-DS team to the forefront. Following him on the podium was Sam Bird, representing the United Kingdom in the Jaguar team, and Mitch Evans from New Zealand, who delivered a commendable performance to secure third place. "It was a fantastic race for me, and I’m happy to be back on top again," said Vergne, expressing his elation after the win.
The following day, the second race saw a shift in fortune, with Stoffel Vandoorne of Mercedes taking the top spot. The Belgian driver was dominant throughout the event, marking his triumph with a stellar finish ahead of Alexander Sims and Pascal Wehrlein.
Known for its picturesque views and challenging circuit layout, the Rome ePrix has become a prominent fixture in the electric racing calendar. The 3.380 km street circuit provided an exhilarating backdrop for both races, unfolding amidst the architectural beauty of the Italian capital.
Race one saw Stoffel Vandoorne achieve pole position with a remarkable time of 1:38.484, while Mitch Evans recorded the fastest lap on lap 20 with a time of 1:42.387. The race classification illustrated tightly-contested competition, with Vandoorne leading ahead of a fierce pack of talented drivers. "Starting from pole position really helps in a race like this; it gives you the upper hand at the beginning," commented Vandoorne on his advantageous starting point.
The qualifying sessions were key in determining the starting grids for both races. In the first race’s qualifying, Vandoorne’s prowess was evident as he edged out André Lotterer of Porsche, who secured a second-place grid position. "The team did an incredible job to adapt to the circuit quickly, and I think that’s what made the difference today," Lotterer remarked.
As the electric cars zipped through the streets, the excitement reached fever pitch. The second race, while it crowned Vandoorne the victor, also showcased the competitive spirit of Sims and Wehrlein, who finished second and third respectively. "It’s always been a dream to race here in Rome, and finishing on the podium makes it even more special," said Sims after the race.
